Gothic, renaissance and baroque. Murcia Cathedral brings together a variety of architectural styles in a uniquely beautiful building that will undoubtedly linger in your memory. Its construction started at the end of the 14"' century upon the remains of an old mosque and was completed in 1754. A real must-see, the cathedral boasts many outstanding features: the main facade (conceived as a gigantesque baroque retable), the slender tower (symbol of the city), the Apostles' door, the Los Velez chapel, the Junteron chapel... Out of curiosity, see if you can find the broken link in the stone-carved chain that surrounds the exterior of the Los Velez chapel. The cathedral's surroundings are also very interesting, with the Italianate Episcopal Palace on one side and an avant-garde building designed by architect Rafael Moneo opposite. The cathedral is very much part of everyday life in a city where joyfulness and bustle live side by side with tranquillity and relaxation. While you are here, take the time to enjoy a drink at one of the pavement cafes around this historic square.
