Ancient fridges in the mountains

The Sierra Espuna's snow "wells" are well worth a visit, especially in winter when there is snow on the hills. Dating back to the 16th century, these "wells" were the equivalent to today's refrigerators and were used to store the winter snow. There are 26 in all, located between 1,100 and 1,400 metres above sea level. In the old days, villagers used to have to trek up the mountain to store and pack down the snow they had collected from the plains
